Learn to make Traditional Paint
Traditional, environmentally-friendly paints are an ideal solution at all historic houses.
Modern paints are usually made with a plastic binder but traditional paints are made with natural, organic materials, such as linseed oil, eggs and milk protene. Traditional paint is something anyone can learn to make at home. The process is not dissimilar to cooking and requires knowledge, skill, elbow grease and passion. Like cooking, paint making is deeply rewarding and the results are well worthwhile, since traditional paints are also considerably less expensive than modern paints, are ideal for retouching cracked or damaged historic surfaces and are environmentally friendly too.
The Danish Conservation Architect, Ulla Lund MAA, has decades of expertise in the management of public and private restoration projects, and a lifelong interest in traditional paint-making methods. She will come specially to Ireland to lead this one-off event.
Under Ulla's expert guidance participants will learn how to make
- Linseed Oil Paint - particularly gratifying to work with and durable
- Egg Tempura - used by the Vikings. Suitable for internal and external use
- Milk Protein Paint - magical on rendered or porous surfaces
The course will stretch over two non-consecutive days, with a two-day weekend break in the middle. The interval is absolutely essential because traditional paint needs plenty of time to dry.
