Power & Politics - Blackwater Valley

A day-long programme of lectures on Power and Politics along the valley of the River Blackwater, in the west of County Waterford.

From the early 17th century until the late 19th century events in the Blackwater Valley often reflected the country as a whole but, on occasion, the region moved central stage and became the focal point for major change. 

Topics and Lecturers include:-

"Waterford and the Winning of Civil Rights in the Age of Daniel O'Connell" by Prof. Patrick Geogheghan of Trinity College Dublin.

"Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork: Statesman and Warlord (1629 - 1643)" by Dr. Dave Edwards of University College Cork

"Home truths about Walter Raleigh, Richard Boyle and Edward Spenser" by Prof. Tadgh O'Keeffe of University College Dublin

"Power struggles: marriages and money in an Anglo-Irish family in the 19th century" by Patrick Cockbury, The Independent Newspaper, London

The day begins with morning coffee, there is a break for lunch and conversation, and the event concludes with afternoon tea.
