The Gardens of Curraghmore

An instructive walk through the gardens at Curraghmore during European Private Heritage Week, led by the Head Gardener.

Curraghmore, in the picturesque valley of the River Clodagh, has been the home of the de la Poer family since the 13th century and the demesne was laid out in about 1750 by Sir Marcus Beresford, later first Earl of Tyrone, after his marriage to the heiress Catherine de la Poer.

The result is Ireland’s largest and finest landscaped park, with the great house and forecourt at its centre surrounded by formal gardens, including a parterre and tiered lawns, a lake, an arboretum with many champion and specimen trees, a superb mid-eighteenth century shell house and some of Ireland’s most spectacular native woodland.

Guided tours of Curraghmore House can be booked in afternoon, at an additional charge.
